Peter Mintchev is an extremely pure and exquisite author with a laconic language that is equally conceptual and pictorial.  The works presented in the current exhibition are synthesized to an extent that they rather resemble self defining scientific facts, as graphically derived lemmas that form the basis of the relationship between nature and people watching it.

LANDSCAPES
Peter Mintchev

Let us propose that the fundamental objective of the landscape image is the creation of a place that presents an improved alternative to reality.  The methods of illusionism employed in landscape imagery might therefore be seen as a textual mode that helps us not only to conjure up the appearance of this alternative reality, but also to imagine ourselves as self-evident inhabitants of its spaces.  The use of illusionism thus allows us to participate in the imagination of a singular alternative collectively, and it is to this possibility that we are most attracted as viewers of landscapes.  The stronger the realism of the image, the more confident we feel in our ability to objectively read it; with this confidence comes certainty in our relation to the truth of the image, and thus in our ability to recognize it in unequivocal terms.  Yet at the same time, the certainty of recognition that illusionism elicits comes at a price: the loss of freedom within the process of imagination, along with the freedom to view our reality as somehow inadequate to our needs.

In this exhibition, I have tried to achieve a balance precisely between the objective of the landscape image and the methods by which it is produced, or in other words, between the desire to freely imagine reality and its environments differently, and the illusionism necessary to present such alternatives in visual terms.  In this is an undeniable attempt to extend the historical tradition of the landscape image's function as a representation of a time and place apart; but my aim has also been to openly differentiate the represented place of the landscape image from the techniques by which it is rendered.
