Contemporary Icons: Recent Art from Bulgaria Curated by Dr. Jeffrey Hughes   Artists: Daniela Kostova, Valdimir Mitrev, Ivan Moudov, Houben Tcherkelov, Kosta Tonev, Desislava Kostadinova Unger,Borjana Ventzislavova Hunt Gallery   March 23 – April 21, 2012   Opening Reception:  Friday, March 23, 2012  6-8 pm Panel discussion with exhibiting artists:  Friday, March 23, 11:00am-1:00pm Winifred-Moore Auditorium, 470 East Lockwood Ave., St. Louis As the first exhibition of contemporary Bulgarian art in the Midwest, Contemporary Icons: Recent Art from Bulgaria demonstrates the range of important and vibrant works being created by artists in (or from) Bulgaria.  Several of these artists have not been widely shown in the United States, however, each of the artists included have been represented in major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and Manifesta, etc.  The Contemporary Icons exhibition is comprised of works in various media, installation, video, photography, painting, etc., and yet all suggest a highly engaged and provocative understanding of contemporary international neo-conceptual practices.  While not specifically political in nature, many of the works are directly linked to the theme of a post-Communist Bulgaria and how images can symbolically critique or even subvert structures of power.
