As the first exhibition of contemporary Bulgarian art in the Midwest, Contemporary Icons: Recent Art from Bulgaria demonstrates the range of important and vibrant works being created by artists in (or from) Bulgaria.  Several of these artists have not been widely shown in the United States, however, each of the artists included have been represented in major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and Manifesta, etc.  The Contemporary Icons exhibition is comprised of works in various media, installation, video, photography, painting, etc., and yet all suggest a highly engaged and provocative understanding of contemporary international neo-conceptual practices.  While not specifically political in nature, many of the works are directly linked to the theme of a post-Communist Bulgaria and how images can symbolically critique or even subvert structures of power.
