In times of ongoing conflicts, political instability, economic crisis and global climate cataclysms the oldest event dedicated to performance art in Bulgaria prepares for its 19th physical edition. Founded in 1997 by prominent art critic Ruen Ruenov (1958-2011), Sofia Underground has the mission to serve as a flexible artistic mirror of reality, bringing together creators from all over the world to perform in various unconventional locations. Ever since, with a few short breaks, this event has developed a prominent sensitivity according to public processes and the dynamics of the local and international art scenes.
The festival will unfold over 5 days with over 40 participants who will present performances, lectures, installations, sound and dance projects and collaborations, aiming to explore new and exciting spaces and audiences in Sofia.
Partners of Sofia Underground are OKI Krasno Selo, Bobbina Cultural Space, Koncept Space, Synaesthesia Collective.
The festival is a member of the European Association of Festivals (EFA) and is realized with the support of Goethe-Institut Sofia, Adam Mickiewicz Institute, Liszt Institute Sofia - Hungarian Cultural Institute and the first residence program of the European Festival Fund for Emerging Artists, co-financed by the European Union.
